Wearing TOMS Without Socks — Stop the Canvas Smell Fast

Wearing TOMS Without Socks — Stop the Canvas Smell Fast

TOMS · Sockless Living

TOMS Alpargatas are the classic sockless summer shoe — but canvas insoles are among the fastest to develop permanent odor without protection. Here's how to keep your TOMS fresh all season.

TOMS have been a sockless staple since they launched. The slip-on Alpargata, the espadrille styles, the canvas sneakers — all designed for easy, barefoot-feeling wear. The canvas upper breathes well and the flat profile looks clean without visible socks.

The problem is canvas insoles. Unlike foam or leather, canvas is an extremely thin, highly absorbent material with zero odor resistance. Foot sweat soaks directly into canvas fibers within the first wear, and bacteria establish themselves almost immediately. TOMS worn sockless daily without protection can develop a strong, permanent smell within the first week — faster than almost any other shoe type.

Why Canvas is the Worst Insole Material for Sockless Wear

  • Canvas absorbs instantly. Unlike foam which at least has some surface tension, canvas wicks moisture directly into its fibers on first contact. The insole is saturated within minutes of wear.
  • Canvas has zero odor resistance. No antimicrobial treatment, no natural odor-inhibiting properties — canvas is essentially a blank slate for bacteria to colonize.
  • TOMS canvas insoles cannot be replaced. The insole is part of the shoe's construction in most TOMS models — once it smells, the only option without NotSocks is to retire the shoes.
"I bought three pairs of TOMS every summer because they'd always smell terrible within a few weeks. Now I have one pair with NotSocks and they've been fresh for the entire season."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you wear TOMS without socks?

Yes — TOMS are designed for sockless wear. But canvas insoles develop permanent odor very quickly without protection. Install NotSocks before the first sockless wear to prevent the problem entirely.

Why do my TOMS smell so bad?

Canvas absorbs foot sweat immediately and holds bacteria efficiently — it's the worst insole material for odor resistance. Once canvas smells, it's nearly impossible to fully remove. NotSocks prevention is far more effective than attempting a cure.

Do TOMS insoles come out?

Most TOMS Alpargata models have a thin canvas insole that can be lifted out. Some models have the insole more firmly attached — for these, NotSocks can be placed directly inside the shoe over the fixed insole for the same protection.

Keep Your TOMS All Summer. Not Just the First Week.

NotSocks™ protects canvas insoles from sweat damage — so your TOMS stay fresh from May through September.
